Jewish Historical Museum
The history of the Jewish Museum
The roots of the Jewish Historical Museum are on the attic, de Waag 'on the Nieuwmarkt. In 1932, a small, modest collection could admire here. During the Second World War the exhibits were confiscated. In 1955 the museum reopened. In 1974 the collected objects completely filled the building. Today the exhibition is housed in four former ashkenazi Synagogues from the 17th and 18th centuries. There is also a special children's museum.
What you can see in the Jewish Museum
The permanent exhibition in the Jewish Museum explores the role of religion and tradition, as well as the persecution of Jews during the Second World War in the Netherlands. The extensive exhibition shows only 5% of all. With the ticket for this museum you also have access to the Portuguese Synagogue, the National Holocaust Museum, which is located in the former teacher training center, and the Hollandsche Schouwburg (the former theater) where the Holocaust Memorial is located. All four buildings are located in the not quite one square kilometer old Jewish quarter, in the heart of the city.
