Lemmer is the gateway to many lakes and canals in Friesland and is a real water sports city. From the port of Lemmer, you can easily spend a sailing trip on the IJsselmeer or on the Frisian lakes. There are supermarkets less than 100 meters from the harbor, so you can shop quickly in advance before boarding.

Story

Until the 20th century, Lemmer was one of the most important fishing villages in the Netherlands. Among other things, this location owes its fleet of 146 ships, including the 'Lemsteraken' flat-bottomed sailors - traditional sailing ships from Lemmer. With the construction of the closure dike and the reclamation of Flevoland, Lemmer lost importance in the fishery. Nowadays, Lemmer has, above all, a central function for the south of Friesland and the north of Flevoland.

Due to its convenient location on the IJsselmeer, this former fishing village has grown into an international water sports center. The Frisian lakes are also easily accessible from Lemmer. The old and above all cozy center of Lemmer stands with a lively ship passage also under the sign of the water sports.

What is there to experience and see?

On the IJsselmeerbeach you can swim, surf and sunbathe to your heart's content. In Lemmer you can visit the local museum 'Lemster Fiifgea' and learn a lot about the history of Lemmers, the Lemsteraken and other interesting facts. The Ir. D. F. Woudagemaal near Lemmer is the world's largest still operable steam pumping station. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1998. You can also visit the pumping station, which operates several days a year.
