Castle Radboud

At the end of the 13th century Count Floris V had this castle built for protection, against the West Frisians.

History of castle Radboud

According to a legend from 1517, the castle of Radboud, stood on the Zuidersee in the 7th century. Remnants of this castle have never been found. At the end of the 13th century Count Floris V of Holland had a fortified castle built on the same spot. The location could be defended excellently, because it was surrounded by the Zuidersee from three sides. In 1889 the 600 year old castle was saved from ruin by restoration work and now serves as a museum.

About castle Radboud

During your visit to the museum castle you will make a small excursion to the Middle Ages. The exhibition on the history of the castle and the city of Medemblik offers many interesting facts. The exhibition is accessible via a spiral staircase placed in the tower. Then you descend to the prison, where it can be a bit creepy and you can end your trip in a pleasant way in the coffee room. With a treasure hunt children can explore the castle and they look forward to how people lived in a castle in the Middle Ages.
