Harlingen Beach

The beach in Harlingen originated in 1997 when the canal was deepened for the salt industry. Today the beach is known as a nice place to relax, swim or practice various (water) sports. Sailors, canoeists, surfers, many sports fans have fallen in love with the Harlinger beach and the ideal waves.
From the beach you have a view of the salty water of the Wadden Sea and of the harbour in Harlingen, which is only a 10-minute walk away.
Since 2003, the Netherlands Clean Foundation organizes the 'Schoonste Strand van Nederland' (the cleanest beaches of the Netherlands) contest. After several unannounced inspections of all 92 beaches in the Netherlands, the Harlinger Strand has also received a rating: 4 out of 5 stars! This means that the beach has received 9 as a report. Not only is there no waste on the beach, but also the swimming water is of excellent quality. Wetterskip Fryslan - the Water Board Friesland – has noted this, they regularly check the quality of water.
There is a (partly paid) car park on the Westerzeedijk and also on restaurants and toilets. In the summer months dogs must be leashed, from September to April the beach is a run-off area.
