From the Gouwzee, the Gothic tower of the large St. Nicholas Church is a clear landmark of Monnickendam. The brown fleet at the Lange Brug is located in the atmospheric harbor. Behind this drawbridge are several restored fishing boats that keep the memory of the fishing alive. Until 1920 these botters were built at the former shipyard of Monnickendam. Fish is still being smoked in the inner harbor and the specific smell is filling the harbor. The port is located near the historic center of Monnickendam. In the small town are a number of nice restaurants and several shops, these are often aimed at tourists.
